Welcome to Hatch Hill Landfill
Director of Administration & Solid Waste
The Bureau of Solid Waste manages the Hatch Hill Solid Waste Disposal Facility that serves Augusta and eight surrounding communities with its landfill, transfer station, and recycling program.
The Bureau of Solid Waste operates under the Department of Public Works overseen by Director Lesley Jones. The Department of Public Works is organized into smaller, specialized bureaus to enhance our effectiveness. This structure allows us to focus on different areas of community service with the required expertise.

- People are encouraged to use their own reusable containers to store their recyclables. A new recycling bin will not be provided.
- ecomaine has provided informational material for us to hand out (including the do’s and don’ts for what can be recycled through their program and what cannot). Information is also located on the City’s website and social media platforms.
- Communities that use Hatch Hill for their solid waste disposal will have access to the container at Hatch Hill.
All customers are required to purchase a Hatch Hill vehicle permit. (Augusta residents may use a 3-Trip Pass.) The scale operator issues vehicle permits to cash customers, who want to purchase them at Hatch Hill, provided they have a valid vehicle registration from Augusta or one of the contracting communities.
Permits may also be purchased at the Tax Collector's office located on the second floor at Augusta City Hall - 16 Cony Street, Augusta, ME 04330.
An Augusta resident is allowed to use Hatch Hill and pay the required tipping fees three times a year without having to buy a Hatch Hill permit. In order to get a 3-trip pass, the customer must show proof of Augusta residency at the Hatch Hill facility. This can be done with a driver's license, car registration, or utility bill. If an Augusta resident has used their 3-trip pass for that calendar year, then they need to purchase a Hatch Hill permit.
Persons performing work for residents, for example, someone hired to take items to Hatch Hill, are not permitted to have a 3-trip pass.
Hatch Hill Member Communities,
The tipping fees for some items will increase at Hatch Hill Landfill starting September 1, 2024. Attached are two documents for you to review and post. The Hatch Hill Gate Fees document lists fees for various bulky items and municipal solid waste items. Universal waste and e-waste fees are listed in the second document.
Please note, that residential single-stream household recyclables and leaf/yard waste are still free items. Permit fees are unchanged as well.
This will be the first increase in universal and e-waste fees in over four years. Costs to recycle and labor to process have continued to increase requiring this change.
