Police Officer

Basic qualifications are set by the Maine Criminal Justice Academy.


1) Have taken and passed based on the standards of the Maine Criminal Justice Academy, the Physical Agility Test, and the Alert test given by the Maine Criminal Justice Academy.

2) Completion of an Oral Board Interview, Background Investigation, Psychological Examination, Chief of Police interview, Polygraph examination, physical examination, and City Manager interview.

Dispatcher

Successful completion of an Oral Board Interview, Background Investigation, Psychological Examination, Chief of Police interview, polygraph examination, and physical examination.

The Volunteers in Police Service

The Volunteers in Police Service (VIPS) are a group of highly trained and motivated citizens dedicated to exemplary community service and public awareness. The purpose of the VIPS program is for volunteers to assist their local law enforcement agencies in a wide range of roles and functions. Volunteers help fill critical gaps in program support and provide essential technical expertise.


Volunteers are not utilized to replace sworn officers or other paid positions, but rather to enhance the overall efficiency of the agency. 


Requirements and Selection:

1) Resident of Augusta

2) Minimum age of 18 years

3) Ability to contribute a minimum of 8 hours per month

4) Successfully complete an interview and background investigation

5) Complete the required Orientation and Training

The process to apply for one of these permits is as follows:

1) Complete the appropriate form: Parade Permit and/or Mass Outdoor Gathering

2) Parade permits require a completed safety plan

3) Return the completed form and safety plan (if applicable) to the Chief of Police: Kevin D. Lully, Augusta Police Department, 7 Willow Street, Augusta, Me 04330. The Chief and Department Heads will review the application and notify in writing of the approval or denial of the permit.

Media Log

The Media Log has been created to assist the public and media agencies with accessing the daily log of incidents occurring within a 24-hour period, usually completed by 09:00 AM. Questions regarding the Media Log can be directed to Deputy Chief Jesse T. Brann, Monday through Friday at 207-626-2370 Ext. 3416. After hours and on weekends, please call 207-626-2370, press #0 for a Dispatcher, and request to speak with the on-duty supervisor.

LANDLORD LOG

The Landlord Log is posted to assist property owners and property managers to better monitor their properties for possible violations of the Disorderly House ordinance.


Sec. 13-27 Disorderly house.

[Amended 5-19-2003 by Ord. No. 51]

A. Definition. Disorderly house shall mean any dwelling to which the police have responded eight or more times in any thirty-day period involving the conduct of the owner, tenant(s), or tenants' co-habitees, guest or invitees which would unreasonably disturb the community, the neighborhood or an individual, including, but not limited to: loud music; boisterous parties; sounds emanating from within the structure which are audible outside the dwelling; loud noise or fights involving tenants of the dwelling or their invitees; tenants or invitees of tenants being under the influence of drugs or intoxicating liquor; the arrest and conviction of tenants or their invitees for activities which constitute either a crime or civil infraction under either state or local law; other similar activities. Dwelling is defined as any single or multifamily residence or part thereof, including garages, outbuildings, exterior grounds and separate apartments. This section applies to all such conduct occurring at or within 300 feet of the dwelling.


B. Notice of disorderly house:

(1) Whenever a dwelling has been visited by the police four times, but less than eight times in any thirty-day period, in relation to incidents which meet the above definition, the police department, or any other agent designated by the City Manager may notify the owner of the circumstances involving the police responses.

(2) Whenever a dwelling has been identified as a disorderly house by the city, the city shall provide written notification of the events which form the basis for the designation to the owner.

(3) The notice shall require the owner or the owner's designated agent to meet with representatives of the city within five business days, or such time as is agreed by both parties. The intent of such meeting is to discuss the issues surrounding the circumstances involving the police responses to the disorderly house. At the meeting, the parties shall make a good faith effort to reach a written agreement which will require the owner to make reasonable efforts to resolve the problems which have required police intervention.


C. Violations:

(1) The following shall be considered violations of this section:

(a) Failure to attend the meeting with the city.

(b) Failure to make a good faith effort to reach an agreement.

(c) Failure to comply with the agreement.

(2) The first violation of this section will result in a $100 fine being imposed against the owner. The second and all subsequent violations will result in a maximum fine of $500. If the city is required to bring an action in court to enforce this section, it may seek injunctive relief and will be entitled to its reasonable attorney's fees.

PARKING

Parking on City Streets can be challenging during the winter months as the City tries to remove snow and keep the streets and sidewalks passable for travelers, emergency responders, and pedestrians. Parking on all City streets is prohibited from the hours of 10:00PM to 7:00AM from November 15th to April 15th; unless granted permission from the Augusta Police Department.


The Police Department tries to work with people that have limited space for parking during the winter months. People can apply for parking on the street by using the form titled, Request for Permission for Overnight Parking. Once this form is complete you can drop it off at the Augusta Police Department (7 Willow Street) or email it to me directly by using the link to the right of this page. You may also pick up physical copies of these forms at the Police Department.


Forms will be reviewed by a supervisor and notification will be made to the person requesting permission whether or not the request was granted.

Winter Overnight Parking and Snow Removal Notifications

The Augusta Public Works Department (as well as other city departments) have implemented the use of an e-notification citizen alert system to notify residents and business owners about snow removal, potential flooding, etc.


The City is launching a new citizen alert system in July 2024 that will require all interested parties to re-enroll. For more information, please visit the Bureau of Communications and Marketing page.
