THE PLANNING BUREAU

Provides professional land-use and strategic planning services to Augusta residents, taxpayers, the City Council, the Planning Board, and City staff so that physical changes in the built environment reflect Augusta's aspirations, to the largest degree possible. 


The Bureau coordinates the City's efforts to manage Augusta's growth through long-range planning and regulation of land development. Planning staff review applications and provide the planning board with analysis of rezoning, conditional use, subdivision, development review, shoreland and special exception use applications.


The Department of Development Services, overseen by Director Matt Nazar, includes Planning and Administration, Code Enforcement, Economic Development and Facilities.


Administration provides clerical services for the Bureaus of Planning, Code Enforcement, Facilities and Buildings, and Economic Development.

2023 Comprehensive Plan

On November 2, 2023, the City of Augusta City Council voted unanimously to approve the 2023 Comprehensive Plan. This milestone marks the culmination of efforts that began in 2018, involving extensive public engagement and adeptly navigating the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. The plan reflects the community's vision for Augusta's future, aiming to foster sustainable growth, enhance quality of life, and ensure the city's resilience for years to come.
