Community Response Team
The Augusta Police Department Community Response Specialist was a role created in 2024 to begin to address the surge in calls related to mental health, homelessness, substance use and other social needs within Augusta. The job description evolves to meet the ever-changing needs within the city of Augusta. The goal is to develop supports which serve the community and alleviate the strain on first responders by allowing appropriate professionals to serve those they have been trained to serve. Community response partners with the OPTIONS program and other community service providers to meet the needs of individuals and families as they arise.
Dawn Kearns was hired by the city in September 2024. She brings to this role experience in crisis intervention, substance use and has compassion and a willingness to serve people no matter the circumstances. In this role, Dawn can provide brief intervention and connection to appropriate support, services and/or treatment. As the need grows, so too will the Community Response Team and input from the community will be invaluable.

One of the primary Community Response partners is the OPTIONS (Overdose Prevention Through Intensive Outreach Naloxone and Safety) Program. In Kennebec County, there are two liaisons partnered with police. Ashlee Kimball covers the Augusta area and together with two peer recovery coaches, Ashlee supports those who struggle with substance use. OPTIONS provides brief interventions, connection to service/treatment, support for affected others, education, transportation and harm reduction strategies and supplies.
