Public Safety Dispatcher
The Augusta Police Department is seeking a dedicated individual to join our team as a Public Safety Dispatcher.
In this vital role, you will answer and prioritize calls for service, coordinate police, fire, and rescue responses, and serve as the critical link between the public and emergency personnel. You will work in a fast-paced, high-responsibility environment, communicating with patrol units via radio and telephone, responding to requests and relaying directions in real time. You will also enter and receive computerized information while simultaneously logging and recording all activities accurately.
This position serves the City of Augusta, provides dispatch services for the Hallowell Police and Fire Departments, assists with responses outside city limits when needed, and manages after-hours emergency calls for the Augusta Water District. Dispatchers work a “2-2-3” schedule, which follows a two-week rotation from Saturday through Monday and consists of one (1) 36-hour workweek and one (1) 48-hour workweek during each rotation. Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent required. Candidates must have strong communication skills, sound judgment, and the ability to remain calm while handling multiple tasks in a fast-paced, high-stress environment with minimal supervision. Related training or experience in dispatching, public safety, or emergency services is preferred. Must obtain and maintain required State and national certifications. A comprehensive background check, including a polygraph, is required. Ability to work assigned shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays, and mandatory overtime, is essential.
Compensation & Benefits This full-time, non-exempt position offers a comprehensive benefits package. The FY26 pay range for Teamsters Dispatch is $23.20-$31.11 per hour, with annual COLA and step increases; starting pay depends on experience, qualifications, and budget availability.
The City covers 80% of health insurance premiums and 90% of dental and vision insurance premiums. The health plan includes an employer-funded Health Reimbursement Arrangement (HRA) for eligible deductible expenses, plus $350 annually for a Medical Flexible Spending Account (FSA).
Additional benefits include participation in the MainePERS Special Plan 3C defined benefit retirement plan (no Social Security participation), paid time off (vacation, sick leave, and accrued time off in lieu of holidays), life insurance, and access to optional benefits such as short-term disability, a 457(b) plan, and tuition reimbursement. A medical buyout option ($3,000 - $3,600 annually) is available for those with alternate coverage.
