Ad Hoc Homeless Advisory Group
The purpose of the Advisory Group is to meet regularly to ensure the city is taking steps toward accomplishing goals outlined by the Task Force, and to periodically report back to the City Council and the public on the progress that is being made.
In the summer of 2024, the City Council approved the creation of the Augusta Task Force on Homelessness (the “Task Force”) for the purpose of establishing a program that coordinates services for the unhoused in Augusta. The Task Force was a team of appointed individuals, agency representatives, and stakeholders brought together to work in coordination with one another to improve the efficiency and delivery of services to our unhoused population. The thirteen-member group, chaired by Wick Johnson, met 16 times, conducted 6 listening sessions, heard presentations from 9 experts, and produced a 42-page blueprint for addressing the crisis.
The charge to the Task Force was to inventory existing services, identify gaps in services, research best practices, and to pull recommendations and strategies into a usable plan document that includes potential sources of funding and that leads to successful outcomes for people experiencing homelessness in our area.
In March of 2025 the Task Force issued its report and a series of recommendations. See the Augusta Task Force on Homelessness Final Report and Recommendations dated March 27, 2025. Among the recommendations was one calling for the creation of an advisory group to succeed the Task Force. To that end, and pursuant to my authority under the city charter to appoint members to ad hoc committees, this memorandum serves to establish the City of Augusta Homeless Advisory Group.
