Fleet Service Manager

The City is seeking an experienced and forward-thinking Fleet Services Manager to lead the strategic and operational management of our Central Garage Bureau. This key leadership role is responsible for capital planning, budgeting, and the full lifecycle management of the City’s diverse fleet of vehicles and equipment. Working closely with the Public Works Director, Chief Mechanic, and City departments, the Fleet Services Manager ensures safe, efficient, and fiscally responsible fleet operations that support essential public services.


The ideal candidate brings strong expertise in fleet management, automotive and heavy equipment maintenance, budget administration, and regulatory compliance. This position oversees procurement and inventory control, develops and implements fleet replacement plans, maintains comprehensive maintenance and asset management systems, and ensures compliance with state and federal safety standards. The Fleet Services Manager also supervises Central Garage staff, supports operational scheduling, prepares technical equipment specifications, and identifies strategies to improve efficiency and reduce costs. Requirements: Two-year Associate's degree in business, public administration, auto technician/mechanic, or a related field. Minimum of six (6) years’ progressively responsible experience in equipment servicing or fleet management, including at least three (3) years in a supervisory capacity. Valid State of Maine Motor Vehicle Inspection License (A&D) or ability to obtain within the first year of employment. Must possess a valid Class C Maine driver’s license and either currently hold or be able to obtain a CDL Class A or B license within six (6) months of hire. The Public Works Department offers an in-house CDL training program at no cost to employees.   All positions requiring a CDL must participate in the City’s drug and alcohol testing program as required by FHWA rules.


Compensation & Benefits: This salaried exempt position falls within Non-Union Salary Range 18, which is currently $69,139 to $96,512 annually. Actual rate of pay will depend on experience, qualifications, and available budget. Employees are eligible for annual cost-of-living adjustments (COLA) as well as potential merit-based step increases. The City of Augusta offers a choice of three excellent health insurance plans. Depending on the plan selected, a Health Reimbursement Arrangement (HRA) may be available to help offset deductible costs. Employees who are covered under a qualifying alternative health plan may be eligible for a medical buyout, currently ranging from $2,400 to $3,600 annually, based on coverage eligibility. Retirement benefits include mandatory enrollment in the MainePERS Plan AC, a defined benefit pension plan. Please note that employees in this plan do not contribute to Social Security. Employees also earn paid vacation and sick leave, receive 13 paid holidays per year, and have access to Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) for medical and dependent care expenses. Additional benefits include life insurance, short-term disability coverage, an optional 457(b) deferred compensation plan, tuition reimbursement, and more.
