Things You Should Know

Old Fort Western's Mission is To Protect, Preserve, and Interpret the National Historic Landmark Fort, Store, House, and Tenement on the Kennebec River in Maine’s Capitol City. Maintaining this mission affects everything we do.

Accessibility and ADA Compliance
Please be aware that the main garrison is an original 1754 building, and the blockhouses are 1920 reconstructions modeled after the original standing blockhouse at Fort Halifax.  Therefore not all areas are wheel chair accessible.  Fort Western is working to comply with all aspects of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).  If you require special accommodation, please contact us at  least two weeks prior to your visit. We will make every effort to meet specific needs.

Pet Policy
Unless a bonified service animal, dogs are not allowed in the original 1754 garrison.

Electronic Devices
While visiting, you are welcome to take pictures from your phone; however, we ask you not take videos unless you call ahead and gain permission first.

Thank you for understanding!
