The City of Augusta is proud to announce that it has been awarded a $500,000 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) to support the Malta Street Senior Housing project. This grant, provided by the Department of Economic and Community Development, will support the development of 34 new affordable housing units for seniors, addressing a critical need for affordable housing in our community.
"We are thrilled to receive this grant, which will enable us to provide much needed affordable housing for our senior residents," said Economic Development Director Keith Luke. "This project will not only enhance the quality of life for our seniors but also contribute to the overall vitality and inclusiveness of our community."
The Malta Street Senior Housing project is a partnership between the City, Augusta Housing Authority, and Developers Collaborative. The dynamic funding supporting the project will pass through the City of Augusta to the Augusta Housing Authority and Developers Collaborative. The project will consist of a three-story building with 32 one-bedroom apartments and two studio units, for seniors aged 55 and older. These units will be income-restricted to households earning 60% of the area median income (AMI) or less. Located adjacent to the Hodgkins School Apartments, the site offers easy access to recreational fields, walking trails, and essential services like grocery stores and pharmacies.
The Malta Street Senior Housing project is an initiative aimed at addressing the shortage of affordable housing in Augusta. With the grant funding, the Augusta Housing Authority will move forward with project planning and administrative tasks immediately, ensuring all preparatory work is completed efficiently. Construction is anticipated to begin in July 2025.
"This funding is crucial for the success of the Malta Street project," stated Haley Gauvin, Communications Director for the City of Augusta. "We look forward to seeing the positive impact this development will have on the community. The City of Augusta recognizes the importance of supporting its senior residents and is committed to ensuring they have access to safe, affordable housing. This CDBG award is a testament to that commitment.”
