Welcome to the Bureau of Parks & Recreation
The Bureau of Parks and Recreation Department manages 23 public parks, 5 schools, and 20 cemeteries. These properties encompass a diverse network of managed parkland, natural areas, and recreational facilities.
The Bureau of Parks & Recreation operates under the Department of Community Services, overseen by Director Earl Kingsbury. The Department of Community Services is organized into smaller, specialized bureaus to enhance our effectiveness.
Total ParkLand
The total parkland in Augusta is 1,400 acres. This includes city-owned parks, schools, and cemeteries; as well as state-owned and privately-owned parkland.
CITY-OWNED PARK LAND
The total area of city-owned parks is 607 acres. With a population of just under 19,000 residents, Augusta has 32 acres of city-owned park land per 1,000 residents. According to the National Recreation and Parks Association, Augusta’s city parkland far exceeds the national average of 10 per 1,000 residents.

There are three unique natural areas in the Augusta Parks system:
BICENTENNIAL NATURE PARK
A 27-acre waterfront nature park on Three Cornered Pond. The park is available for Augusta residents. The wooded park features hiking trails, a large picnic area with tables and grills, restrooms and a changing area, a swimming area with docks and floats, and carry-in boat access.
BOND BROOK RECREATION AREA
A 270-acre wooded parcel with three primary access points and 10 miles of trails, including single-track mountain biking trails and groomed cross-country ski trails.
HOWARD HILL
Kennebec Land Trust holds a conservation easement on this 164-acre City-owned property. There are three miles of trails and two scenic overlooks. A portion of this land is accessible from Hallowell.
The City of Augusta Recreation Bureau provides an environment where the residents of Augusta and its surrounding communities can engage in fun, healthy activities all year long! We offer a range of sports and recreational activities for children and adults.

PLAYGROUNDS
There are a total of 12 playgrounds in the city:
- Seven playgrounds are in city parks - including McCalls Park Playground and Williams Park Playground
- Five are at local elementary schools
- All playgrounds are traditional play structures constructed primarily of metal and plastic.
POOLS
There are three public outdoor pools located at McCalls Park (Eastern Ave), Williams Park(Bangor Street), and Calumet Park(Northern Ave). There is also a small splash pad feature at Cunningham Park.

The Augusta community has access to a variety of courts and fields. The list below includes all outdoor courts and fields that Augusta residents have access to (including some state or privately owned:
