Welcome to Bureau of
Health and Welfare
THE BUREAU OF HEALTH AND WELFARE PROVIDES ESSENTIAL AND IMMEDIATE ASSISTANCE, THROUGH ITS GENERAL ASSISTANCE PROGRAM, TO AUGUSTA RESIDENTS IN NEED OF FOOD, FUEL, SHELTER, AND MEDICAL ATTENTION.
The Bureau of Health and Welfare operates under the Department of Community Services, overseen by Director Earl Kingsbury. The Department of Community Services is organized into smaller, specialized bureaus to enhance our effectiveness. This structure allows us to focus on different areas of community service with the required expertise.
Assistance may be requested 24 hours a day and 7 days a week, and must be provided within 24 hours of determined eligibility. Referrals for other assistance are also made to other social and medical service agencies when appropriate.
If assistance is needed outside of normal operating hours (e.g. after hours, weekends, or holidays) and eligible for emergency assistance, please contact 211 or the Augusta Police Department at 207-626-2370.
