Q. What are your office hours?
A. We are open from 7:45am to 4:30pm, Monday through Friday. We are closed all State and Federal holidays.

Q. Where do I get a birth/marriage/death certificate?
A. If the request is for a copy of a death or a birth that occurred in the City of Augusta or the decedent’s (for death) or mother’s (for birth) residence were Augusta when the event occurred, this office would have that on file. If the marriage license was filed in Augusta, this office would have the marriage certificate on file, regardless of where the ceremony took place.

The fee for a certified copy is $10.00. Additional copies of the same record are $5.00.

Q. How do I file for a marriage license?
A. Residents file for a marriage license in the town/city where either the bride or groom resides. Augusta residents file at the City Clerk’s Office. Picture ID is required. If there are prior marriages, a certified copy of the document ending the last marriage (death or divorce) is required. There is no waiting period and the license is valid for 90 days.

The fee is $30.00.

Q. Where are divorces filed?
A. Divorces are filed at the County courthouse where the divorce was granted, Superior Court or at State of Maine Vital Records located on Water Street.

Q. How/when do I register my dog?
A. State law requires that all dogs are licensed in the town/city where they reside. This is an annual license due December 31 of each year. A rabies certificate and neuter/spay certificate (if applicable) must be presented at the time of licensing. In order to avoid the late fee, your dog must be licensed by January 31, when the dog is 6 months old or within 10 days of acquiring the dog.

The fees are: $10.00 for an unaltered dog, $6.00 for an altered dog, $15.00 late fee or $25.00 warrant fee (after March 1).

Q. How do I register to vote?  Where do I vote?
A. Residents of the City of Augusta register to vote at the City Clerk's Office.  You may register to vote at any time including Election Day. On Election Day you may register at the polling place. Polling places are as follows:

Ward 1 Buker Community Center
Ward 2 City Center
Ward 3 Augusta Civic Center (North Wing)
Ward 4 St. Andrew's Parish Hall

Q. What is the schedule of City Council meetings?
A. Generally, the City Council meets for regular business meetings on the first and third Mondays of the month; informational meetings, the second and fourth Monday.  Special meetings and workshops are scheduled on an as-needed basis.The agenda for the next City Council Meeting is available on this website under the Local Government section. All regular business meetings are televised live on Cable’s Government Channel 7.

Q. What types of business licenses do I need to operate within the City of Augusta?
A. We have a myriad of licenses and a fee schedule on file at the City Clerk's Office.  Please contact us to determine if your type of business requires a local license.

Q. Am I required to file my business name with the City?
A. Yes, unless you are incorporated, you are required to file your business name with the City. The fee is $10.00 to file or withdraw a business name.

Q. Where do I get my hunting/fishing license?
A. All Fish and Game licenses and stamps are available at the City Clerk's Office. You may also buy hunting and fishing licenses online. There is a shortcut to the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Game on the main page of this website. Fees vary.

Q. Where do I go to get a document notarized?
A. We have notaries on staff at the City Clerk's Office. We require a current picture ID. The fee is $5.00 per document.
